Kuwabara Takeo, born in Fukui Prefecture, was a researcher of French literature and culture. He graduated from Kyoto University in 1926 and was hired as a professor at Tohoku University in 1943. Five years later he took a position at Kyoto University and spent the rest of his life bringing French literature and literary criticism to Japan and translating many works into Japanese. In 1987, he was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit for his lifetime contribution to cultural research.
