TAYAMA KATAI
(1872–1930)
   Tayama Katai, given name Rokuya, was one of the founding writers of Japanese naturalism. He began writing following a stint in the Russo-Japanese war. The bulk of Katai’s novels are autobiographical, and his most famous works include Futon (1907; tr. The Quilt, 1978) and Inaka kyoshi (1909; tr. Country Teacher, 1984).
