The plan adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, Resolution 181 II, on 29 November 1947. Based on the majority recommendation of the United Nations Special Committee on Palestine (UNSCOP), it called for dividing the Palestine mandate (see BRITISH MANDATE FOR PALESTINE) into an Arab state and a Jewish state, an economic union linking the two states, and an internationalized sector (corpus separatum) including Jerusalem. It provided the basis for Israel's independence and the resultant Arab-Israeli conflict.
