Cherry f
English: now generally regarded as an Anglicized spelling of the French word chéries darling (cf. CARA (SEE Cara)). However, Dickens used it as a pet form of CHARITY (SEE Charity): in Martin Chuzzlewit (1844) Mr Pecksniff's daughters Charity and Mercy are known as Cherry and Merry. Nowadays the name is sometimes also taken as referring to the fruit.
