Dutch form of JASPER (SEE Jasper), also found as an occasional variant in English. According to legend, this was the name of one of the three Magi or ‘wise men’ who brought gifts to the infant Christ. The Magi are not named in the Bible, but early Christian tradition assigned them the names Caspar, Balthasar, and Melchior.
