Timothy m
English form, used in the Authorized Version of the Bible (alongside the Latin form Timotheus), of Greek Timotheos, composed of the elements tīmē honour + theos god. This was the name of a companion of St Paul; according to tradition, he was stoned to death for denouncing the worship of Diana, but there is no historical evidence for this. Surprisingly, the name was not used in England at all before the Reformation.
Cognates: French: Timothée. Italian, Spanish, Portuguese: Timoteo. Polish: Tymoteusz. Russian: Timofei.
Pet form: Russian: Tyoma.
