Scandinavian: Latinized form of the Old English female name Sunngifu, composed of the elements sunne sun + gifu gift. According to legend, St Sunniva was a 10th-century British princess who was shipwrecked off the coast of Norway and murdered by the inhabitants as she struggled ashore.
