1 (f.) Spanish: from Spanish sol sun (Latin sol), apparently alluding to the beauty and purity of the celestial body. This was a common given name in the Middle Ages, being borne, for example, by one of the daughters of El Cid, and it is still in use today; in part it may now be taken as a short form of SOLEDAD (SEE Soledad).

2 (m.) Jewish: short form of SOLOMON (SEE Solomon) used in the English-speaking world. The pet form Solly is also used.
