English: 1 (m.) Transferred use of the surname, which is of Irish origin, being an Anglicized form of the Gaelic byname Ruadhán ‘little red one’ (a diminutive of ruadh red; cf. ROY (SEE Roy)). It was borne by a 6th-century saint who founded the monastery of Lothra, and it is an alternative name of the 5th-century saint also known as RONAN (SEE Ronan).
