Rolf m
English, German, and Scandinavian: a contracted version of an old Germanic personal name composed of the elements hrōd fame + wulf wolf. This is found in Old Norse as Hrólfr. As an English name, it represents in part a Norman importation of a Continental Germanic form, in part a much more recent (19th-century) importation of the modern German name. See also RUDOLF (SEE Rudolf).
