Polish: from the feminine form of the Greek name Pelagios (Latin Pelagius), a derivative of Greek pelagos open sea. The name was borne by various early saints, including a fifteen-year-old virgin martyr of the 4th century who died by throwing herself from the top of a building to preserve her chastity.
