German: from an old Germanic personal name composed of the elements od, ot prosperity, fortune, riches + wacar watchful, vigilant. A version of this name was borne by the Gothic king Odo(v)acar (?434–93), who ruled most of Italy from 476–493, in which year he was assassinated by his rival Theodoric. The name was also borne by two 13th-century kings of Bohemia.
