Aodh m
Irish and Scottish Gaelic: name, meaning ‘fire’, of the old Celtic sun god. This was a very common personal name from the earliest times. From the later Middle Ages it was commonly Anglicized as HUGH (SEE Hugh) and more recently as EUGENE (SEE Eugene), but the Gaelic form has also survived in common use. It has given the surnames Magee (Gaelic Mac Aodha) in Ireland and McKay (Gaelic Mac Aoidh) in Scotland.
