1 English: transferred use of the surname, which is derived from a Norman baronial name, originally borne by the lords of Mortemer in Normandy. The placename meant ‘dead sea’ in Old French, and probably referred to a stagnant marsh. It was not used as a given name until the 19th century.
2 Irish: Anglicized form of MUIRIARTACH (SEE Muiriartach).
3 Jewish: Anglicized form of MOSES (SEE Moses).
