Italian: from Latin Maurus, a byname meaning ‘Moor’, i.e. ‘dark, swarthy’, borne by a dozen early saints. In the 6th century it was the name of one of the earliest followers of St Benedict, placed in the care of the monk at an early age by his father Eutychius.
