Maggie
Maggie f
English: pet form of MARGARET (SEE Margaret). In the Middle Ages the short form Mag(g) was common, as a result of the early loss in pronunciation of the English preconsonantal r. This is not now used as a given name, but has given rise to the surname Maggs; Maggie is also a derivative of Mag(g) formed with the characteristically Scottish hypocoristic suffix -ie. Until recently it was most common in Scotland. It is now fashionable elsewhere as well.
Cognate: Scottish Gaelic: Magaidh.
