Jean m, f
1 (f.) English and Scottish: like JANE (SEE Jane) and JOAN (SEE Joan), a medieval variant of Old French Je(h)anne. Towards the end of the Middle Ages this form became largely confined to Scotland. In the 20th century it has been more widely used in the English-speaking world, but still retains a Scottish flavour.
Cognate (of 1): Scottish Gaelic: SÌNE (SEE Sine).
