Iona f
Scottish and English: from the name of the tiny island in the Hebrides, off the west coast of Mull, where in 563 St Columba founded a monastery that became an important early centre of Christianity. It is said to result from a misreading of the Latin form of the island's name, Ioua, as Iona. Its Gaelic name is Ì, from Old Norse ey island. The given name is most common in Scotland, but is also used elsewhere in the English-speaking world.
