Humbert m
English, French, and German: of Germanic origin, introduced to Britain by the Normans. It is composed of the elements hun bear-cub, warrior + berht bright, famous. It was not common in Britain in the Middle Ages, and has always had a Continental flavour. It was used by Vladimir Nabokov for the name of the demented pederast, Humbert Humbert, who is the narrator in his novel Lolita (1955). This has no doubt contributed to its demise as a given name in the English-speaking world.
