Hope f
English: from the vocabulary word hope (Old English hopa), denoting the quality, in particular the Christian quality of expectation in the resurrection and in eternal life. The name was created by the Puritans and has been one of their most successful coinages. The given name is still fairly common, and has its existence independently of the vocabulary word. It has probably been reinforced by transferred use of the surname Hope, which is derived from the dialect term hope meaning ‘enclosed valley’ (Old English hop).
