Hippolyte m
French: from Greek Hippolytos, composed of the elements hippos horse + lyein to loose, free. The name was borne by several early saints, including an important 3rd-century ecclesiastical writer. In classical legend it had been borne by an unfortunate youth who was the object of his stepmother's love and met his death in a chariot accident. The popularity of the name in France was increased by the use of the legend as the subject of a tragedy by Racine (1677).
Cognates: Italian: Ippolito. Spanish, Portuguese: Hipolito. Catalan: Hipòlit, Pòlit.
