Scandinavian: from an Old Norse personal name composed of the tribal name Gautr + the element stafr staff. According to some scholars this name is of Slavonic origin (cf. DAGMAR (SEE Dagmar)), and originally had the form Gostislav or Goslav. It has been borne by various kings of Sweden, beginning with Gustav Vasa (?1496–1560), who was elected king in 1523 after freeing Sweden from Danish rule.
