Gerard m
English, Irish, and Dutch: of Germanic origin, introduced to Britain by the Normans. It is composed of the elements gār, gēr spear + hard brave, hardy, strong. In the Middle Ages this was a much more common name than GERALD (SEE Gerald), with which it was sometimes confused, but nowadays is less common. It survives mainly among Roman Catholics.
