Scottish, English, etc.: Latinate feminine derivative of GEORGE (SEE George). This feminine form originated in Scotland in the 18th century, when George itself became common among anti-Jacobites. It has now been borrowed by other European languages, including Dutch, German, Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish.
