Frank
Frank m
English: 1 Of Germanic origin. The name referred originally to a member of the tribe of the Franks, who are said to have got the name from a characteristic type of spear that they used (as the Saxons did from a characteristic knife). When the Franks migrated into Gaul in the 4th century, the country received its modern name of France (Late Latin Francia) and the tribal term Frank came to mean ‘Frenchman’.
2 Now quite often taken, especially in America, as a short form of FRANCIS (SEE Francis).
3 Anglicized form of the Italian name FRANCO (SEE Franco). The popularity of Frank as a given name was greatly enhanced, especially among Italian Americans, by the fame of the singer Frank Sinatra (b. 1915).
