Firmin m
French: from Late Latin Firminus, a derivative of firmus firm, steadfast. This was a popular name among early Christians mindful of St Paul's injunction to ‘be stedfast in the faith’. It was borne by several early saints, including the first and third bishops of Amiens (2nd and 3rd centuries); the third bishop of Gévaudon; a 5th-century bishop of Metz; and 6th-century bishops of Viviers, Uzès, and Verdun.
Cognates: Italian, Portuguese: Firmino. Spanish: Fermin.
