Scottish: Anglicized form of the Gaelic name Fionnghall, composed of the elements fionn white, fair + gall stranger. It was originally a byname applied to Norse settlers (cf. DOUGAL (SEE Dougal)), and was adopted by James Macpherson (1736–96), author of the Ossianic poems, to render the name of the Gaelic hero Fionn (see FINN (SEE Finn)).
