Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese: from Late Latin Dōnōtus ‘given (by God)’ (the past participle of dōnāre to give, donate). The name was popular among early Christians and was borne by over twenty saints in the first centuries AD. Among the most famous is a bishop of Arezzo in Tuscany who was beheaded under Julian the Apostate.
