French: from Late Latin Dēsīderius, a derivative of dēsīderium longing. The name was popular among the early Christians, who chose it to give expression to their longing for Christ. Among the saints who bore it are an early bishop of Langres and 7th-century bishops of Auxerre, Cahors, and Vienne, all of whom are subjects of local cults.
