Italian and Spanish: from the Latin family name (later a personal name) Celsus. This was originally a nickname from the Latin vocabulary word celsus tall, high, lofty. The name was borne by various minor early Roman saints, and it has also been used as a Latinized form of several Irish saints called CEALLAGH (SEE Ceallagh).
