German and Jewish: short form of WOLFGANG (SEE Wolfgang) and WOLFRAM (SEE Wolfram), or else an independent given name going back to an old Germanic byname meaning ‘wolf’ (Old High German wolf). Wolves were plentiful in the forests of northern Europe throughout the Middle Ages, and played an important part in Germanic folklore. As a Jewish name it has been used as an equivalent to ZEEV (SEE Zeev).
