Winthrop
Winthrop m
English (esp. U.S.): from the surname of a leading American pioneering family, and still more or less completely confined to America. John Winthrop (1588–1649) was one of the first governors of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and his son (1606–76) and grandson (1638–1707), who bore the same name, were also colonial governors. Their family probably came originally from one of the places in England called Winthorpe (named in Old English as the ‘village of Wynna’).
