Winston
Winston m
English: transferred use of the surname. Although there was an Old English personal name, Wynnstan, composed of the elements wynn joy + stān stone, which would have had this form if it had survived, the modern given name originated in the Churchill family. The first Winston Churchill (b. 1620) was christened with the surname of his mother's family, who had come originally from the hamlet of Winston in Gloucestershire. The name has continued in this family ever since, and has recently been more widely used in honour of the statesman Winston Spencer Churchill (1874–1965).
