Windsor m
English: transferred use of the surname, which is derived from a place in Berkshire, originally named in Old English as Windels-ōra ‘landing place with a windlass’. It is the site of a castle that is in regular use as a residence of the royal family. Its use as a given name dates from the mid-19th century and was reinforced by its adoption in 1917 as the surname of the British royal family (from their residence at Windsor in Berkshire). It was felt necessary to replace the German name Wettin, which had been introduced by Queen Victoria's husband Albert, in deference to anti-German feeling during the First World War.
