German: from a Germanic personal name composed of the elements wald rule or wal foreign, strange + burg fortress. St Walburg was of Anglo-Saxon origin, the sister of St WILLIBALD (SEE Willibald), and the original form of her name was Wealdburh or Wealburh. She became abbess of Heidenheim and her relics are preserved at Eichstatt.
