Russian: vernacular loan translation (from the Slavonic element svet light) of the Greek name Phōtinē (from Greek phōtos light). St Photine was an early saint martyred at Rome in the 1st century; in the Eastern Church she has been identified with the ‘Samaritan woman’ mentioned in St John's gospel, chapter 4.
