English: variant of ROSALYN (SEE Rosalyn), influenced by the suffix -een (in origin the Irish Gaelic diminutive -in). ‘Dark Rosaleen’ was the title of a poem by James Clarence Mangan (1803–49), based on the Gaelic poem Róisín Dubh; in it the name is used as a figurative allusion to the Irish nation.
