Spanish: from a title of the Virgin Mary, Maria de la Rocío ‘Mary of the Dew’ (Spanish rocío, from Late Latin roscidum, an adjectival derivative of ros dew). Dew is closely associated with Mary, and is sometimes symbolically connected in Roman Catholic hagiography with the tears which she sheds for the wickedness of the world.
