Rhett m
American English: transferred use of an American surname derived from Dutch de Raedt, from Middle Dutch raet advice. It was invented for the character of Rhett Butler in Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind (1936). Like some of the other names in that novel (cf. ASHLEY (SEE Ashley), CAREEN (SEE Careen), and SCARLETT (SEE Scarlett)), it has attained a modest currency in the real world.
