Scandinavian: from the Old Norse female personal name Ragna, a short form of the various compound names containing the element regin advice, decision (also, the gods), as, for example, RAGNBORG (SEE Ragnborg) and RAGNHILD (SEE Ragnhild). The name was used in the Viking period and revived in the late 19th century. In modern use it is to a large extent taken as a feminine form of RAGNAR (SEE Ragnar).
