Spanish: Marian name, taken in honour of the feast of the Purification (Spanish purificación, from Late Latin purificātio, a derivative of purus pure + facere to make). This feast is celebrated on 2 February, and commemorates the day when, in accordance with Jewish law, the Virgin Mary took her son Jesus to the temple for the first time to present him to God and be herself purged of the uncleanliness associated with childbirth.
