Ninian m
Scottish and Irish: of uncertain origin. This was the name of a 5th-century British saint who was responsible for evangelizing the northern Britons and the Picts. His name first appears in the Latinized form Ninianus in the 8th century; this appears to be the same as the Nynnyarv recorded in the Mabinogi. The given name was used in his honour until at least the 16th century in Scotland and has recently been revived.
