Madonna f
English (esp. U.S.): from an Italian title of the Virgin Mary (literally ‘my lady’), applied to countless Renaissance paintings of beautiful young women (with and without infants), representing the mother of Christ. Its use as a given name seems to be a fairly recent phenomenon, arising among Americans of Italian descent. In the 1980s, the name became particularly well known as a result of the fame of the American pop star Madonna Ciccone (b. 1958).
