Jesús m
Spanish and Portuguese: name taken in honour of Christ. The name Jesus is an Aramaic byform (meaning ‘saviour’) of the earlier Hebrew name JOSHUA (SEE Joshua). It was suggested to Mary's husband Joseph by the angel of the Lord at the Annunciation: ‘she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins’ (Matthew 1: 21). In many European countries it has been felt impious to give this name to mere mortal children, but there are no such inhibitions in the Hispanic world, where it is regularly bestowed as a token of Christian faith.
Feminine form: Jesusa.
Pet forms: Chus, Chucho m, f.
