Italian: from the name of the Carthaginian general Hamilcar Barca (d. c.228 BC), father of Hannibal. Hamilcar led the Carthaginian army against the Romans in the First Punic War, and was chiefly responsible for establishing Carthaginian influence in Spain. His name is composed of the Phoenician elements hi friend + the divine name Melkar.
