Holger m
Scandinavian: from an Old Norse personal name composed of the elements hólmr island + geirr spear. The name was borne by a character of medieval romance, one of Charlemagne's generals, known in English as Ogier the Dane. One tale about him is that he quarrelled with the emperor after Charlemagne's son Charlot had killed his own son. He was flung into prison, but agreed to lead an army against the attacking Saracens on condition that Charlot was handed over to him. When this request was granted he spared his life, won a great victory, and was reconciled with Charlemagne and richly rewarded by him. This form of the name results from mediation through Old French sources, where it fell together with a different Germanic name having the first element odal riches, prosperity, fortune.
