Scottish and English: from the Scottish surname, the name of a famous clan, which is nevertheless probably derived from a Norman nickname meaning ‘large’ (Anglo-Norman grand). In America the name is sometimes bestowed in honour of the Civil War general and 18th president, Ulysses S. Grant (1822–85).
