Goretti f
English and Irish (borne by Roman Catholics): name bestowed in honour of the 20th-century Italian saint, Maria Goretti. In 1902, at the age of eleven, she was savagely assaulted by a neighbour in an attempted rape. She forgave her attacker before expiring in hospital, and was canonized in 1950 as an example to children of a saintly life at an early age.
