English: of Germanic origin, introduced to Britain by the Normans. It is composed of the elements god god (or gōd good) + fred, frid peace. The name was very popular in the Middle Ages. It was borne by, among others, a Norman saint (c.1066–1115) who became bishop of Amiens. There has been considerable confusion with GEOFFREY (SEE Geoffrey).
