Giles m
English: much altered version of the Late Latin name Aegidius, from Greek Aegidios (a derivative of aigidion kid, young goat). The name was very popular in the Middle Ages, as the result of the fame of the 8th-century St Giles. According to tradition, he was an Athenian citizen who fled to Provence because he could not cope with the fame and adulation caused by his power to work miracles, in particular by healing the lame and crippled. He is the patron saint of cripples.
Variant: Gyles.
